Publication Cover and Package Process-Tests: (Week 10)

During the making of the cover of my publication, I tested and tried using different types of materials to bind my book together. I focused more on testing the binding because I knew that I wanted to use acrylic as the front and back cover of my publication.

During the testing, I was able to work with hinges, bendable metal string and thread (used for coptic binding.) For the publication I was really hoping to use something metal like/ looking to reflect the bars and metal equipment from the gym but it did not work out too well for it kept moving, as well as the way it would hang on the side.

Here is an image of the laser digital file and testing. ( it took 6 trys to get the right size and look.)

Here are just a few photos of the laser testing. Me and Kian tested the pressure as well as the size of the strokes for the arm outline. I tested the pressure of the outlines because my initial idea was to fill the gaps with glow in the dark paint to resemble the idea of an x-ray to add some interest to the acrylic.

Here was the testing of the glow in the dark paint. So with the first test, we lasered it backwards so that the hole will be at the back of the acrylic so that it would look cleaner. Although that was the idea, I found it better to laser it on the front so that the hole will be at the front so the look of the glow in the dark paint will be cleaner. Also, I initially wanted to use metal rings to bind but it did not hold together so well. So, I decided to do Coptic binding instead

Here are some images of the cover in the dark. I found this to be quite cool and interesting because I have never seen it as the front cover of a publication before.

THE PURPOSE OF MATERIALS: The reason behind the materials was was to be able to keep the theme consistent throughout the whole publication. I chose to work with metal binding to resemble the metal equipment from the gym and glow in the dark paint to resemble the x-ray which connects to his job as a nurse. Due to the failed experiment, I decided to try Coptic binding instead but use a white thread to keep it clean. But I also had an idea of using grey or silver thread to still resemble the metal equipment. Also, I had an idea of using the white thread and coat it with glow in the dark paint

Moreover, I also tried to coat the thick thread with glow in the dark paint, it did work but was too thick for me to thread through the pages and also it was not as obvious and bright as I wanted it to be.
