Illustration Research: (Week 5-6)

Inspiration of Line art:

To further my ideas and theme, I decided to look up types of illustrations and designs that inspire me when thinking of my place. During the research, I came across a work on Behance from Foals and Stallions and found it quite interesting. (Links will be done below.) Foals and stallion had created a series of one-line illustrations featuring different stances of horses for a new horse food packaging range.

I found this specific work of theirs to be quite interesting and reminded me of line art. Personally I’ve always liked line art and have always found beauty in its simplicity, interesting curves and its movement. As I thought more of the idea of line art, it reminded me of the emotion of peace due to the movement and curves of the lines; it does not look too chaotic nor too loud. Although it is quite minimal, it is still quite interesting to look at. Moreover, I think it would fit nicely with my theme and hopefully will look/work well with my photographs and typography.

Further Research:

What is line art? “Line art is any image that consists of distinct straight or curved lines placed against a (usually plain) background, without gradations in shade (darkness) or hue (colour) to represent two-dimensional or three-dimensional objects.” “Line Art.” Wikipedia. Wikimedia Foundation, March 18, 2020. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Line_art.

Within my interest with line art, I did further research from who started it or made it popular and I just learnt that Pablo Picasso was the one who made it popular/Known. Down below are some of Picasso’s earliest ‘One line Drawings.’ Pablo Picasso Drawings, n.d. http://www.pablopicasso.net/drawings/.

“He took a complex, realistic example and simplified it into one single unbroken line. These drawings can look relatively simple to make, but capturing the true essence of the shape in just one line can be quite challenging.” Gemmeke, Michelle. “The Art of One Line Drawings.” Medium. Medium, October 6, 2018.

More examples of artists who do line art/drawings:

Differantly or ‘DFT’ – a French creative duo that practice ranges from art direction to one line illustration, product design, wall art and installation. http://www.differantly.com/

The images above are just a few screenshots of DFT’s line art illustrations that was designed for brands like Hermès and Nike, alongside some other works.

Notion – is a design studio based in New Zealand, run by Ken the one line illustrator. https://notionofficial.com/

For the images of Notion’s work shown above, it showcases a mix of Notion’s line art shown as art prints and was also used for t-shirt designs.

Moodboard:

Here is a moodboard of more line art used in design that inspire me. (A mix of the work shown earlier and other designs.)

Reflection: After having done some research on line art and artists/illustrators who do this work, it has inspired me to try this out for myself and try it create my own one line drawings and line illustrations. Also, I’m thinking of trying this out in the form of typography.
