Illustrations: (Week 6-7)

The process/ Sketches and drafts:

First sketch For my first sketch, I had started to doodle a whole group of plants, leaves and stones from my place while trialing the line art idea. For the idea, I wanted to keep that minimalistic feel of the line art illustrations by not making it too detailed. I think that these came out quite cute and could possibly use as a whole for mu publication or move them around so it’s not clustered together.

Second sketch For my second sketch, I was inspired by the face drawings from line art and decided to do one of my own while not including the eyes and the head but just the mouth and nose where these are the parts that help us to breathe. Whereas, I had covered the eyes and mind by some plants that are wrapped around the top half of her face. Through this illustration, I tried to represent my connection to the place. Here the plants (which represent nature) are trying to reduce her anxiety and stress by wrapping their vines around her as if they were hugging her mind while giving space for her to breathe. Also, by covering her eyes, she is able to just imagine and think

Third sketch For my third sketch, I sketched some more leaves and adding lines that were inspired from my typeface explorations as well as trying to include the element of a concrete poem. For the concrete poem looking leaves, I had wrote parts of my poems in the shape of the leaves and ferns.

Digitalisation Process:

After having done my sketches, I had digitalised them and tweaked a few things afterwards. Overall, they all came out the way I had drawn them but the only difficulty I had was with my third design, With my third design, because I had hand-written the poem text, it came out unreadable and did not look like how it did on my paper so I had decided to ditch the look but just keep the drawn leaves. (Could still keep the concrete poem idea in mind though when doing my publication.

Incorporating colour/ Exploring my older art design:

Here were some explorations of incorporating colour into my work. Here I continued to keep that calm feeling and minimal look and feel through the colours. (Side note, I had eventually started to think of doing a landscape publication so I would have to flip these illustrations to a landscape.)

Here were just some more testing and explorations I had tried exploring especially with the idea of layering which I am quite curious to explore more of in terms of illustrations.

For my older line art explorations, I had tried bringing them out of the photographs and had tried to explore them by itself. They came out quite cool in this way too. Now, what I’m just wondering next is how to incorporate all these illustrations into my publication?

Here was some more line art illustrations I tried during the lockdown using paint and I’m going to try and digitalise this and see how it looks.

Reflection: I’ve decided to keep doing some more illustrations and try incorporate more of the concept of mind and place in regards to my connection to this place in how it helps reduce anxiety. Moreover, I have a lot more Ideas that I want to try out especially with the concept for layers and continuity for the illustrations. Just have to keep pushing these ideas. Also want to try do more illustrations about my place and mind and place connection.
