Moving Image exercise: (Week 1)

Film: “When the Fat girl gets skinny”

What do you think the film is going to be about?: From the name itself, I’m assuming it’s going to be about beauty struggles of a girl as well as beauty standards and mental health. (Mainly in terms of size and weight.)

Where is the setting of the moving image?: It is set in the main characters home- it showcases 3 settings, a bedroom, storage room and a bathroom. I also assume that it is set in America due to the actress’s accent from the voice-over.

How is sound used through the film, Does it change?: The main thing we hear throughout the film is a voice-over as well as ambient noise playing in the background. The sound of a guitar, playing softly and strumming lightly in the background. The style of speaking (the voice-over) maintains the same volume as well as pace throughout the film. The music in the. background also stays the same.

What kind of pace does the moving image have?: The pace of the film is quiet slow as it feels emotional and personal.

What kind of colours are present in the video?: The colours present in the video are quite cool, mainly using purple and blue tones. (There is a theme of purple used on the actresses hair, nails, clothes, room wall colour.) Also showcases bright green pills.

Describe the use of motion graphics: They use a san serif youth like font. It also shows contrast between font weight. Moreover, it also shows a delay of sentences for affect.

What kind of transitions are used between shots?: They use straight cuts as well as I had noticed that the camera follows the objects then goes back to her. Shows us her reactions as well as showing us her perspective of what she sees. There are also panning transitions involved.

Anything else?: I noticed that the lighting seems quite dim, I assume that they used natural lighting.
